Monroe home, residents unharmed by garage fire

MONROE — Damage was limited and no one was injured in a Monroe garage fire that took place shortly after midnight Saturday morning.

The Monroe Fire Department responded to 502 W. Marion St. within minutes of the 911 call issued by a neighbor. The garage is a detached structure, but within feet of the house, so the quick response prevented the fire from spreading.

According to Monroe Assistant Fire Chief Eric Jenkins, the home did not suffer any fire or smoke damage and no cars were parked in the garage. Several fire department volunteers were still at Prairie City-Monroe High School helping set up for prom, which made the response time so quick.

The homeowners, who were sorting through the damage late Saturday morning, said they were unaware the garage was on fire until a neighbor pounded on their door to inform them. The residents said they are not sure what caused the fire.
