Newton boys capture golf triangular win

WINTERSET — Playing through a rain downpour, Newton High’s boys edged out Perry by one shot to win the Winterset triangular golf meet Thursday. Newton combined for a 159 while Perry settled for a 160 followed by Winterset with a 167.

“Considering the conditions they were in with the torrential downpour at times, I thought the guys really stepped up and got it done. The course was in rough shape as they had lost their greens keeper,” Newton head coach Pat Riley said.

Riley said it was hard to tell the difference between fairway or rough, and the greens were small and slow. He said the Newton players adjusted well early, as there is not much time to in a nine-hole meet.

Austin Reynolds fired a 38 to lead the Cardinals. Payton Thomas and Trey Vanderlaan each carded a 39. Derek Damman finished with 43 as the four team scores.

Riley said Sam Supino had a couple bad holes ending up with a 47. Paul Maharry shot a 49.

“I was really happy to see three of the top scores in the 30s. Derek had a bad day or we would have had four scores in the 30s and won handily,” Riley said. “Paul and Sam are coming around and will be big contributors for us before this season is over.”

Perry players Noah Wilkening and Kade Vankirk, took medalist and runner up with a 36 and 37, respectively.

Newton is 17-3 overall. The Cardinals play in an 18-hole tournament Tuesday at Oskaloosa.
