PCM, Colfax-Mingo girls finish 4-5 at Montezuma

MONTEZUMA — The Prairie City-Monroe and Colfax-Mingo girls track teams faced a tough field at the Lew Lundy Relays on Tuesday.

The Mustangs won two events on the night, while the Tigerhawks grabbed a trio of bronze medals. Those results helped the two area teams finish fourth and fifth, respectively, in the team standings.

PCM scored 55 points and edged the Class 1A Tigerhawks by three points. South Tama County, a 3A school, won the team title with 195 points, while Pekin was close behind with 168.

Colfax-Mingo once again had key performers gone because of a Prairie City-Monroe soccer match, but coach Zach Tomas was happy with his team’s performance.

“We had several girls make some big strides tonight, and we are starting to see times improve,” Tomas said. “I am very impressed with how the girls step up when our shared soccer girls are gone.”

PCM had one individual win and one win in the relays.

Senior Ashley Van Gorp won the long jump. She unleashed a season-best leap of 15 feet, 7 inches. Her best jump this season prior to Tuesday was 14-7 3/4.

The Mustangs also won the sprint medley relay. The foursome of freshman Delaney Clarke, freshman Avery Stock, sophomore Ashley Miller and freshman Payton Schut hit the finish line first in 1 minute. 59.4 seconds.

Colfax-Mingo’s top two individual finishes were claimed by sophomores Rhiannon Haley and Ries Wilson. Haley was third in the discus with a toss of 100-0. Wilson recorded a season-best mark in the high jump, finishing third with a leap of 4-8.

The Mustangs grabbed bronze medals in the 4x100 and shuttle hurdle relay. Colfax-Mingo also was third in the 4x400.

PCM’s 4x100 relay ran a season-best time of 52.94 to place third. That foursome included senior Emily Hugen, junior Jayci Vos, junior Tatum Nearmyer and Van Gorp.

The Mustangs’ shuttle hurdle relay was third. The foursome of freshman Megan Cowman, senior Morgan Novak, Clarke and freshman Kirstin Ives hit the finish line in a season-best time of 1:20.4.

The Tigerhawks’ 4x400 relay team also ran a season-best time. The team of Wilson, Katerina Mentielova, sophomore Megan Earles and freshman Colleen Craig were third in 4:46.16.

The Tigerhawks run at Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s co-ed meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Baxter.

PCM competes at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at South Tama County. It’s the final night to qualify for the Drake Relays.
