Grinnell DAR Chapter installs new officers

The regular meeting of the Grinnell Daughters of the American chapter meeting was held April 9 at the Drake Library Community Room in Grinnell.

Regent Kris Macy called the meeting to order with 20 members present. The president’s general message was read by Kris Macy and then she reported she will be attending the State Conference May 5-7. Linda Hatch gave a National Defense report and then read the March secretary’s minutes. Bobbie Collins gave the Sunshine report. Betty Carr updated members on Good Citizens. Macy updated members on soup label collection that will be discontinued in August 2016. However any collected and received before then will be honored. Box tops are ongoing.

National contest “letters to service members” are being collected. Letters must start “Dear Soldier (name if have one)” and include words of appreciation, and close with your name. Members may place letters in an envelope that has been addressed with return address included and a postage stamp on envelope but don’t seal. Letters must be collected and hand carried to the National Conference in Washington in June.

Macy inquired about Fourth of July Parade. Volunteers are sought to help organize entries. Discussion also focused on painting snow plow blades.

Jeanette Shannon reported on thank you certificates for veterans who served in Vietnam Era. Shannon, Macy and Suzanne Van Zandt went to the first of two meetings to pass out the certificates and pins to veterans presents. Pictures were taken. Certificates were also given to wives of deceases veterans.

The meeting ended with the installation of officers for 2016-2017. Officers are regent, Kris Macy; chaplain, Mary Rethmeier; vice regent, Liz Wagner; secretary, Suzanne Van Zandt; treasurer, Barb Lease; registrar, Darlene Leib; historian, Phyllis Snook; and librarian, Jane Cruchelow.

Macy read the report she will give at the state conference in May. Meeting was then adjourned. Program followed with Barbara Lease on historical flags from the Grinnell Historical Museum.
