The Piano Men — starring Jim Witter comes to Newton Monday

Show features songs from Elton John, Billy Joel

Newton High School Centre for Performance welcomes a musical celebration of the 1970s, hit by hit from the songs of Billy Joel and Elton John. The Piano Men starring Jim Witter will be in concert at 7 p.m. Monday, a performance sponsored by the Jasper County Concert Association.

Witter, winner of several prestigious awards, and a big name recording artist, with his band of five members leads this tour of the entire decade that begins with “Your Song” and winds along on a musical time machine, saluting two of the century’s most popular songwriters.

This multi-media production, utilizing rear-screen projection, returns the audience members to the newspaper headlines, the automobiles, the people, the events, the toys and the TV shows that shaped the 1970s decade. Along the way, the sounds of “My Life,” “Candle in the Wind,” “Rocket Man,” “Just the Way You Are,” and many more classic hits create an evening that is just too much fun to let it end.

With Jim Witter at the piano and his sizzling musicians on keyboards, guitar, bass, flute, sax and drums, the music is not an attempt to re-create or mimic the sounds of Billy and Elton, but instead Witter unleashes his golden tenor voice on hit after hit to re-create visits to specific landmarks in the pop culture of the day.

Now splitting time between Toronto and Nashville, Jim is a devoted husband and fatherand an artist who truly does justice to the two giants known as “The Piano Men.”
