CMB wins Class B title at Gilbert

GILBERT — The Collins-Maxwell/Baxter girls track and field team won just one event at the Girls’ Bengals Invitational on Monday night.

That didn’t prevent the Raiders from winning the Class A title though. CMB collected 13 top-three finishes at the Gilbert High School track and scored 123.5 points, claiming the title following a narrow win over West Marshall.

The Trojans took second with 117 points, while Madrid (103.5), East Marshall (89.5) and South Hardin (88) rounded out the top five.

“We competed just well enough to win the meet,” CMB coach Jerry Meinerts said. “We need to continue to improve and keep dropping times.

“We doubled up in nine events, which was huge, since we didn’t win too many events.”

Payge Jurgens had the only win as she was victorious in the shot put with a season-best throw of 37 feet, 0 inches.

Jurgens also grabbed a silver medal in the discus with a toss of 98-4 1/2.

Senior Toni Spencer had a big day, too. She was second in the long jump with a season-best leap of 15 feet, 2 inches, took second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.24 seconds and finished third in the 100 with a time of 14.22.

The Raiders had five other individual bronze medal performances. Senior Bridget Hurley was third in the 400 with a time of 1 minute, 5.20 seconds, freshman Brenna Thomson took third in the 3,000 with a time of 12:22.54 and sophomore Brianda Bane collected third in the 400 hurdles in 1:16.61.

Junior Heather Jessen and freshman Lauren Ratliff were third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,500. Jessen finished in 5:31.02, while Ratliff hit the finish line in 5:36.35.

“I thought our distance runners really ran well tonight in the wind and rain,” Meinerts said. “One of the highlights of the meet was the 3-4 finish in the 1,500. They both ran season-best times.”

Another 3-4 finish came in the 100 hurdles. Freshman Gracie Cheville and sophomore Mary Schabilion were third and fourth, respectively. Cheville finished in 18.30, which was .43 seconds faster than her teammate.

Schabilion anchored the shuttle hurdle relay that finished third. She was joined by junior Sydney Ziesman, Cheville and freshman Josie Wierson. They finished in 1:16.88.

Sophomore Sailor Hinegarnder opened the 4x100 relay and was joined by freshman Shasta Moody, Hurley and Spencer. They finished third with a time of 54.26.

Shabilion opened the 4x400 relay and was joined by freshman Piper Larson, sophomore Ashlee Johnson and Hurley. That foursome was third with a time of 4:38.83.

The Raiders get one last chance to qualify for the Drake Relays at 4:30 p.m. Thursday when they host a co-ed meet in Baxter.
