In the Newton boys’ 4-0 soccer win over host Boone, the Cardinals recorded their first penalty kick goal of the season, and Austin Johansen scored his first varsity goal.

“It was another good team performance and a rare back-to-back shutouts,” Newton head coach Sackda Viravong said. “Overall, we dominated the passing and possession game. We established early rhythm and continued to play our game.”

Eight minutes into the game a handball call against Boone resulted in a penalty kick for Newton. Josh Ventling scored on the penalty kick putting the Cardinals up 1-0 at the 32:32 mark.

Newton stayed on the attack putting pressure on the Toreadors’ defense during the first half. Finally, Duncan Lee was inside the six-yard box and found the net with 6:25 left in the first half. Newton led 2-0 at halftime.

It took 47 seconds for Lee to score his second goal of the game to open the second half. Johansen, a sophomore, scored at the 13:52 mark with Tyler Stanton credited with the assist.

Reagan Maple played in goal for Newton. He only saw four shots on goal from Boone and he made two saves.

“We improved a lot with our finishing and scoring opportunities,” Viravong said. “All players on our roster saw action in the second half.”

The Cardinals improved to 5-2 overall. On Monday, they play Class 2A 11th-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes at 7:30 p.m. in Grimes. A freshman game starts at 4:45 p.m. followed by a junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m.
