Hy-Vee to host walking challenge, summer walking group

Six-week walk event begins Monday

Newton Hy-Vee registered dietitian Emily Ring will be leading a six-week Walking Challenge beginning Monday. The challenge will be at 6 p.m. Mondays and at 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays.

Participants are encouraged to keep track of their personal times and distances during the challenge to monitor improvements. The challenge will be held at Agnes Patterson Park/Newton Arboretum to offer a variety of trails and distances for participants to choose from.

Registration is available by phone at 641-792-7030 or in person at the Newton Hy-Vee Customer Service counter. After the six-week challenge is completed, Ring will continue to host weekly walking groups at various parks in Newton, and community members are encouraged to join in each week.

“Walking is a great way to increase physical activity. Regular exercise can help keep blood pressure in check and walking helps lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and raise HDL (good) cholesterol,” Ring said.

Hy-Vee and its registered dietitians are committed to making lives easier, healthier and happier.

The Newton Hy-Vee dietitians offer a variety of classes and programs each month. Events can be found at hy-vee.com or on Facebook.
