Newton boys dominate soccer match with Knoxville

Right in the thick of Knoxville defenders in front of the goal, Newton High’s Griffin Engel found a crease to kick the ball right past everyone including the Panther goalkeeper. It was the second goal of the game for the Cardinals Tuesday.

Engel found himself on the backside of the action a minute later, beating a defender and the Knoxville keeper again.

“We scored three goals in the first 15 minutes and set the game tempo for the rest of the match. It was a great night for goal scorers and as well as teammates who helps to setup the plays,” Newton head coach Sackda Viravong said.

The Cardinals opened the scoring with a goal by Nick Rusk coming off a pass from Josh Ventling at the 33:21 mark of the first half. Engel’s first goal came at the 28:30 mark, and he followed with another shot into the net with 27:19 on the clock.

Newton extended its 3-0 halftime lead with a goal by Duncan Lee with 23:27 left in the second half. Tyler Stanton scored his first varsity goal with 8:10 remaining in the game to push the lead to 5-0. Chet Adams had the assist on the Stanton goal.

The Cardinals put 14 shots on goal and had seven corner kicks.

Grayson Bookbinder started in goal for Newton and made two saves in the first half. He was replaced by Reagan Maple in the second half because of a hand injury. Maple had three saves. It was the first shutout of the season for the goalkeepers.

Newton (4-2) plays a varsity game at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Boone.
