PCM girls cruise in opener

MONROE — Breanna Maher earned meet medalist honors, and the Prairie City-Monroe girls golf team rolled to an easy win in the Mustangs’ season opener on Tuesday evening at a windy and chilly Gateway Recreation Golf Course.

Maher shot a nine-over-par 46 to begin her junior season. The top four Mustang scorers were all better than anyone from Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont or Albia as PCM rolled to an easy win.

The Mustangs shot a 213, while the Rockets carded a 268. Albia only brought three golfers and did not have enough players for a team.

“We got through our first golf meet with a win despite some chilly weather,” PCM coach Val Edwards said. “I am excited for the season to warm up but was happy with our first meet scores.”

Trailing Maher, who had three pars, for PCM was Madeline Mitchell’s 55, while Sabrina Reed and Courtney Bridges both shot a 56.

Ellie Steenhoek carded a non-counting score of 61, and Abby Van Haaften shot a 69.

PCM’s Mackenzie Bussan shot a 57 for the Mustang JV. She tied E-B-F’s Teri Lane, who was the best scorer not on a PCM roster.

The Mustangs host Pleasantville at 4 p.m. Monday.
