Newton girls' track team takes third at Boone Invitational

BOONE — A year ago Newton High’s girls weren’t able to open their track season at Boone Girls’ Invitational because of inclement weather. The weather was better Thursday and the Cardinals began the 2016 outdoor track season as scheduled.

Newton finished third with 99 points behind team champion Des Moines Roosevelt with 152 points and host Boone with 134 points. Marshalltown was fourth with 45 points followed by Fort Dodge with 44 points.

Sophomore Haley Revell had the lone event victory for the Cardinals. Revell won the shot put with a throw of 32 feet, 6 inches. Ali Bestell, another sophomore, was sixth in the event at 28-4 3/4.

Bestell placed second in the discus with a toss of 103 feet while Revell was fourth at 99-10.

Sophomore Hannah Boecker finished in a three-way tie for second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-8, and freshman Abbie Barr was fifth at 4-6. Junior Kenna Winther took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 14-11.

On the track, senior Sydney Jenkins ran second in the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 3.03 seconds and junior Sydney Hook was fifth in 1:18.83. Senior Alex Hutchinson was fifth in the 200-meter dash in 29.09 seconds and senior Elise Axtell took sixth in the 100 meters in 14.45.

Sophomore Morgann Eide placed second in the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.09 seconds and sophomore Audrey Lucas finished sixth in 19.15. In the 400 hurdles, sophomore Alexis Stout took fourth in 1:17.43.

Junior Ellie Horn posted a fourth-place time of 6:00.13 in the 1,500 meters. Vlada Osadcha was fifth in the 3,000 meters in 13:52.71 and sixth in the 800 in 3:02.18.

Four of the Newton varsity relays claimed second place. The 4x800 team of freshman Rachel Rhoads, sophomore Tessa Keeton, senior Kaelee Knoll and Horn was second in 11:16.52. The foursome of Jenkins, Rhoads, Barr and Keeton placed second in 4:33.65.

Newton’s 4x200 relay team of Barr, Rhoads, Winther and Boecker was second in 2:00.05. The shuttle relay team of Stout, sophomore Liz McVey, Eide and senior Fran Lucas took the silver in 1:17.77.

Sophomores Morgan Altman and Randi Walters combined with freshmen Lakin Jenkins and Caelyn Briley to place third in the distance medley relay race in 5:13.16. Newton’s 4x100 team of Sydney Jenkins, Eide, McVey and Stout placed fourth in 55.35 seconds. The sprint medley relay team of Edie, Axtel, McVey and Audrey Lucas was fourth in 2:15.30.

In the junior varsity division, Newton’s Miranda Ervin won the discus, 82-1, and the shot put, 30-3/4. Bailey Wall was third in the discus at 79-3 and fifth in the shot at 26-2.

Madison Bleeker took second in the high jump at 4-2. Anna Coyle was second in the 100-meter dash. Bleeker was fifth in the 800 in 3:13.37.

Bethany Risius won the 400-meter dash in 1:25.15 and Morgan Allen won the 200 in 29.32. McVey took first in the 100 high hurdles in 17.61 and Fran Lucas was second in 19.75.

The Cardinal junior varsity won three relays — shuttle hurdle (Barr, Briley, Audrey Lucas, Morgan Altman) in 1:17.44, 4x100 (Axtell, Hutchinson, Fran Lucas, Winther) in 56.76 and 4x400 (Lakin Jenkins, Briley, Allen, Coyle) in 5:03.87.

The 4x200 team of Serenity Stier, Aliza Blair, Altman and Coyle was second in 2:15.67. The sprint medley relay squad of Stier, Altman, Walters and Hook took third in 2:22.22.

Newton is back in action Tuesday when the girls’ and boys’ track teams compete at South Tama. It is the season opener for the Cardinal boys. Action begins at 4:30 p.m.
