Lynnville-Sully girls open golf season

PELLA — A year away from high school golf competition, Lynnville-Sully’s girls hit the links again as a team Thursday. The Hawk girls opened their 2016 season with a dual meet hosted by Pella at the Pella Country Club golf course.

Pella won the dual with a team score of 203 as Lynnville-Sully’s total was 301.

“I thought we played well for our first meet of the season and our lack of experience,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Justin Hagedorn said. “This meet really taught us the little things that we need to work on that will help bridge the gap between our two teams.”

Freshman Tessa Van Maanen posted the low score of the meet for Lynnville-Sully, tallying a 60 for the nine-hole event. Junior Ida Byggeth shot a 78. Kaylee Van Maanen, a junior and the only returning golfer from two years ago, carded an 81.

Putting up 82s were juniors Kristine Jaenette and Mikayla Smith. Freshman Maddeline Mintle shot a 91.

Lynnville-Sully did not have enough girls to field a team a year ago.

“The girls were glad to get out and compete against other teams. On the way back there was a lot of enthusiasm for golf that we are going to use to continue to get better,” Hagedorn said.

On Monday, Lynnville-Sully’s girls and boys head to North Mahaska for a golf meet. It will be the season opener for the Hawk boys’ golf team. The meet begins at 4:15 p.m.

The Lynnville-Sully boys play against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Tuesday at Harvest Point Golf Course in Oskaloosa. Both Hawk squads host BGM and English Valleys at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at Diamond Trail Golf Course in Lynnville.
