Newton freshman girls win season finale; JV and freshman boys lose

NORWALK — In their final basketball game of the season, Newton High’s freshman girls prevailed 32-26 against host Norwalk Thursday night.

Newton’s freshman boys and junior varsity boys lost their games against Norwalk. The freshman boys lost 65-46, and the junior varsity boys’ team dropped a 41-34 decision. The boys teams have two more games on their schedule.

After a very slow first half in which Norwalk led 7-5 at the break, Newton’s freshman girls picked up their offensive pace. The Cardinals gained the lead on a 16-10 run in the third quarter. They led 21-17 going into the fourth quarter and outscored Norwalk’s Warriors, 11-9, to win.

The Cardinal girls shot just 18 percent, 11-of-60, from the field. They were 7-of-14 from the free-throw line. Newton controlled 32 rebounds, made 27 steals and turned the ball over 21 times.

Peyton Maher led the girls with 11 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Abbi Barr added 11 points and swiped the ball four times. Lakin Jenkins tossed in six points and had six steals.

Scoring two points each for the Newton girls were Emily Valtman and Rachel Rhoads. Valtman pulled down seven abounds and made six steals. Rhoads had five rebounds.

In the freeman boys’ game, Norwalk posted a 40-10 halftime lead and Newton couldn’t bounce back.

Aaron Bartels fired in 14 points for Newton followed by Ryan Barr and Cole Webster with eight points apiece. Thomas Cox and Jacob Murphy had four points each and Collin Hemann added three points. Taylor Greiner and Luke Maharry each scored two points.

Newton’s junior varsity boys led Norwalk, 24-22, at halftime and still had a 32-31 lead going into the final quarter. The Cardinals were held to two points down the stretch, losing 41-34.

Grayson Graham scored 12 points and dished out three assists for the Cardinals. Josh Gulling tossed in eight points. Grant Garvis tallied seven points and grabbed five rebounds.

Justin Fischer scored three points and made two steals. Tyler Stanton and Nate Van Zee had two points apiece.

Newton’s junior varsity and freshman boys play Monday at home against Winterset. The teams travel Thursday to Carlisle.
