C-M girls exact revenge on Bears

NORTH ENGLISH — Colfax-Mingo coach Michelle Grant thought her Colfax-Mingo girls basketball team let a victory slip away when it hosted English Valleys back on Dec. 18.

The Tigerhawks led that game by five heading into the final quarter, but eventually lost by two when English Valleys rallied with a big fourth frame.

Friday, Colfax-Mingo was not about to let that happen again.

The Tigerhawks led by six after three quarters this time around and, despite another comeback by English Valleys, held on for a 39-38 road victory in a South Iowa Cedar League cross-over game featuring the fifth-place finishers from the West (C-M) and East (English Valleys) Divisions.

The Tigerhawks (6-14) were able to exact some revenge in large part because of double-double performances from junior Dakota Hostetter and sophomore Ries Wilson.

Colfax-Mingo led 25-19 at halftime and took a six-point lead into the fourth quarter. English Valleys (4-15) hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute to make things close.

Wilson had 12 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Hostetter added 11 points and 12 boards. McKeely Tjaden chipped in nine points, while Amy Russell contributed six rebounds and four steals.

The Tigerhawks close out the regular season at 6 p.m. Monday at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

Colfax-Mingo opens Class 1A postseason play at 7 p.m. Thursday against North Tama in Traer.
