Hawks power past Tigers

MARENGO — Lynnville-Sully’s boys chalked up their 13th straight win on the basketball court Thursday against host Iowa Valley.

The Hawks, who are tied at the top of the South Iowa Cedar League West, rocked the Iowa Valley Tigers of the SICL East, 75-30.

“The guys did a good job executing the game plan. We were able to steal the ball 22 times and only turned it over seven times,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We did a good job sharing the basketball offensively. We had 21 assists on 31 made baskets.”

The Hawks pushed out to a 14-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. They extended the margin to 42-12 by halftime. Lynnville-Sully outscored Iowa Valley 23-7 in the third period.

Lynnville-Sully shot 48 percent, 31-of-64, from the field while Iowa Valley connected on 10-of-29 field goal attempts for 34 percent. The Tigers sank 9-of-13 free throws to the Hawks’ 6-of-12.

Tyler Van Zante netted four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 18 points to lead the Hawks. He dished out four assists. Kyle Van Dyke poured in 14 points, claimed seven rebounds and made six steals.

Jesse Van Wyk added 11 points. Sage Ehresman had five steals and Canyon Kuhlmann handed out five assists.

Iowa Valley got 15 points from Gavin Collingwood, who was 7-of-11 at the line.

Lynnville-Sully improved to 17-1 overall and 13-1 in SICL play. The Hawks take on Colfax-Mingo at 2 p.m. Saturday at Colfax in a SICL game rescheduled from Tuesday.
