Newton High’s Legacy Night is Tuesday

Eight men will be honored by Newton High School on Legacy Night Tuesday as Newton’s basketball teams take on Pella in Little Hawkeye Conference action.

The NHS Legacy Awards for 2016 go to Dick Foote, Dick Stiles, Stan Kirchoff, Jack Chadwick and Don Perkins. Newton will also honor coaches Tim Trier, Mike Castings and Darren Hurt during a ceremony at halftime of the boys’ varsity game, which starts at 7:30 p.m.

Foote served as the DECA sponsor and coached middle school basketball, sophomore boys basketball and was head girls’ golf coach. Foote started the Taco John’s Youth Basketball Tournament in Newton.

Stiles spent 30 years as an assistant football coach at Newton, working under four head coaches including Frank Gilson, John Jenkins and Ed Ergenbright. Ergenbright, who is the current NHS head football coach, said Stiles had a unique coaching style — old school — but the players loved him.

Kirchoff coached for 40 years from 1960 to 2000. He served as Berg Middle School Athletic Director. He coached varsity girls basketball, middle school football, freshman basketball, varsity girls cross country and was a varsity track assistant coach.

Chadwick guided the Cardinal boys’ varsity golf team for 30 years. During his tenure, Newton won two state championships and finished runner up at state three times. Chadwick coached two individual state champions and his golf teams won 12 conference titles.

Perkins served as the Newton Cardinal Band director for many years.

Trier was involved with Newton High football and basketball, coaching from 1987 to 2015. Castings has coached cross country and track at Newton since 1993. He has coached many athletes to the state cross country and track and field meets.

Hurt was on the NHS football coaching staff from 1982 to 2015, serving as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He coached the Cardinals in the state playoffs 21 times — 1987-2003, 2006, 2007, 2012 and 2014.

There is a reception for the honorees at 7 p.m. in the high school multi-purpose room.
