Newton girls open 4A regional play at home against Bondurant-Farrar

Newton High’s Cardinal girls have beaten two teams and lost to two teams in Class 4A’s Region 7. The Cardinals learned Monday the seedings and pairings for the basketball playoffs when the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the Class 4A and 5A regional pairings.

Newton (8-8) hosts Bondurant-Farrar (4-12) at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 in the quarterfinals of the regional. The other quarterfinal matchup is Carroll (1-15) at Perry (8-9) on the same night.

Awaiting the winner of the Newton and Bondurant-Farrar game is 4A eighth-ranked Pella (15-2). The game is at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 at Pella.

Class 4A 12th-ranked Boone had the other bye in the regional. Boone will host the winner of the Perry versus Carroll game at 7 p.m. Feb. 20.

The Region 7 championship game is at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 hosted by the highest remaining seeded team in the regional.

Regional champions advance to IGHSAU 4A state tournament Feb. 29-March 5 at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Newton defeated Bondurant-Farrar, 61-24, in November to open the season. The Cardinals lost to Pella 71-33 in Little Hawkeye Conference play on Jan. 12 and plays the Lady Dutch again Feb. 9 in Newton.

The Cardinals beat Perry, 56-47, in November. They dropped a 50-27 decision to Boone on Jan. 19.
