In their own words

I have two kiddos with very different personalities which are definitely beginning to flourish. They both have their own ideas, dreams and way of doing and saying things all their own. Currently, they think they do things because of five little people working in their brains thanks to the Disney Pixar movie “Inside Out,” which although not completely correct, has a little truth to it.

My oldest daughter has always been more serious. She takes after me in so many ways, both good and bad, and is a people pleaser with a mischievous streak. I can just see as her mind is churning and growing with each question she asks.

She is very sure in what she says and asks pointed, direct questions. My current favorite thing about her is her vocabulary. She is confident in the words she chooses, even when they are incorrect. A few of my favorites include “smarshsmallow” for marshmallows, “demote” for remote and the “simpsmins” for the Simpson’s. She says them with conviction, and I don’t have the heart to correct her directly because it is so cute.

I also love the way she describes items when she doesn’t know the name of them. One of her favorite snacks are Lay’s Stacks sour cream and onion chips. As that uses words she is not familiar with, she came up with her own name for the treat: yellow chips with green sparkles. They will forever been known as yellow chips with green sparkles in the Pierson house.

In a realm that is a bridge to cross later, I am fairly certain she believes all animals, including humans, come from eggs. It is not uncommon that there is a blanket wrapped little girl on the floor, pretending to be a cat, hatching from her egg. I know it isn’t correct, but it works for now.

My youngest daughter is the opposite. She is like her dad — more carefree, go with the flow and easy to get over things. She adores her sister but is her own person who is more likely to play on her own than need a playmate.

She also has her own vocabulary and distinct way of saying things. Right now, her favorite thing to eat is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. This is a pretty big step because prior to the new found love, she ate no bread at all.

When asking for this treat, she has a unique was of explaining what she would like. It usually goes, “Mommy, I would like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with jelly and peanut butter on it.” I chuckle a little every time she says it.

She also says “oh tay” in place of OK and likes to be “snuggled in” at night instead of just tucked in. I know babies are cute and cuddly, but I like this stage just as much. Seeing their personalities come through makes every day exciting and makes me look forward to what is coming next.
