MONROE — It’s been a pretty big week for Prairie City-Monroe junior Xavier Miller.

On Tuesday, Miller claimed his 100th victory during a quadrangular in Moravia. Thursday, the junior was at it again, this time setting schools records for takedowns and technical falls in a season.

Miller was one of five wrestlers to go 3-0 on PCM’s Senior Night. The Mustangs had little trouble in their three duals. PCM opened the night with a 53-21 win over BGM, defeated Colfax-Mingo 52-30 and dominated Twin Cedars 56-12.

PCM went 6-0 in duals this week and the closest battle came in the win over Colfax-Mingo.

“This week, the meets have already been over before we start because of the forfeits,” PCM coach Cory Waddell said. “The key is about going out there and performing, keeping the action going, getting in better shape and trying new things we can use later.”

The Tigerhawks opened their night with a 54-18 victory over Twin Cedars. After the loss to PCM, Colfax-Mingo was defeated 36-27 by South Iowa Cedar League foe BGM. Overall, Tigerhawk coach Erin Hume was not pleased with the effort.

“We have to rely on the basic things to keep ourselves in matches and give ourselves a chance to win,” Hume said. “The basics win matches at this level, and we aren’t doing the basics right now.”

Several area wrestlers went 3-0 on the night.

For PCM, Miller was joined by Brycen Rogers, Lucas Roland, Wes Cummings, Jakeb Fenton and Jarron Trausch.

Colfax-Mingo’s Adam Teed, Ty Carlson and Garrett Chapman had 3-0 nights, too.

The Tigerhawks were in the dual against PCM until falls and forfeits ended the momentum.

Carlson and Teed both recorded pins at 120 and 132, respectivlely, to give the Tigerhawks a 12-10 lead after four matches. After that, it was all Mustangs until the tail end of the dual.

Roland and Miller recorded back-to-back falls at 138 and 145, and then PCM got three straight forfeits from Nick Buswell, Cummings and Trausch.

Colton Lourens broke up the Mustang run with a pin against Nathan Trausch. The final four matches were forfeits, two in favor of each team.

PCM was handed seven forfeits in the win over Twin Cedars. The Mustangs were given five forfeits against BGM.

The Mustangs won the first eight matches against the Bears. Included in that run were pins by Rogers, Roland and Cummings as well as a technical fall by Miller.

PCM won nine of the first 10 matches against Twin Cedars in the finale. Cummings recorded another pin in that dual, while Cody Wallace won 3-0. The only other contested win came from Miller, who won by technical fall.

Miller has eight technical falls this season, which is a new school record. He is approaching 100 takedowns on the year, which is another record. Miller is 38-4.

“It feels pretty good,” Miller said about his record-setting week. “Now it’s time to focus on the next three weeks though. Those are the big matches.

“I honestly think I can compete with the top guys in the state. I think I can win a title this year if I wrestle my best and peak at the right time.”

The school record for wins in a season is 44 set last year by Tristan Clark, who took second in the state tournament. Roland is 36-2, Trausch improved to 34-5 and Cummings went to 31-2.

“We are done now until sectionals. We have seven practices until sectionals,” Waddell said. “Everyone is 0-0. It’s time to focus on the postseason. It’s time to go to work.”

Wallace, Dalton Schlangen, Chance Palm and Caleb Peter all went 2-1 on the night. Schlangen, Peter and Palm took two forfeits. Fenton (27-15) and Trausch were given three forfeits.

Colfax-Mingo took control of Twin Cedars when it collected four straight wins — three by forfeit — to go up 24-6. Teed and Skyler Aikin both claimed pins in the victory. Two of Teed’s three wins were by fall as he improved to 27-19 on the year.

“He’s been coming into it toward the end of the season,” Hume said of Teed. “There is more fight in him now than there was at the beginning of the year.”

The Tigerhawks jumped out to an 18-0 lead over BGM following forfeit wins by Carlson (34-12) and Teed and a pin from Joseph Carolus (11-5). The only other for Colfax-Mingo wins were a forfeit victory by Reese Arndt at 170 and a 6-4 win by Chapman at heavyweight.

“We thought since we beat them the first time that it would be an easy win this time,” Hume said. “We just didn’t put out the effort needed.

“We have a lot of work to do if we want to do well in the postseason.”

Chapman trailed Jacob McCammant for most of the match, but recovered in the final minute to improve his record to 27-13.

“He wasn’t happy with that performance, but he stuck with it,” Hume said. “He’s in good shape. It shouldn’t have been that score, but it worked out for him.”

Lourens’ only loss on the night came against 1A No. 6 Colton Massengale. Lourens is 26-12 on the year.

Colfax-Mingo next competes at 10 a.m. Saturday in the South Iowa Cedar League tournament at Sigourney.

The Tigerhawks compete in the 1A Sectional 9 tourney at noon on Feb. 6 in Belle Plaine. That sectional includes conference foes Lynnville-Sully, Belle Plaine, BGM, HLV and North Mahaska along with Pleasantville and West Marshall.

PCM’s next meet is the 2A Sectional 12 tournament at noon on Feb. 6 in Albia. The Blue Demons also host Centerville, Chariton, Davis County and Knoxville.

“We have to polish a couple things up and keep the intensity like we have this week,” Waddell said. “The matches that we won, we went out and dominated them. That’s what I want to see right up through the postseason. We are right where we want to be.”
