Newton freshman girls beat Carlisle

Newton High’s freshman girls used a 14-8 scoring run in the second period to stake a 22-14 halftime lead over visiting Carlisle Monday. The Cardinals chalked up a 50-41 basketball win at home.

Peyton Maher paced the Cardinals with 16 points, six steals, six assists and seven rebounds. Abbie Barr finished with 12 points and four steals.

Emily Valtman scored seven points, and Rachel Rhoads had six points and four steals. Teddie Brunsmann had four points and four rebounds. Maddi Thayer scored three points and Brittney McConnell added two points.

Newton shot 32 percent, 18-of-56, from the field and downed 8-of-13 free throw attempts. The Cardinals hit 6-of-8 from 3-point range. They had 37 rebounds, 18 steals and 26 turnovers.

Newton’s freshman play Friday at Dallas Center-Grimes.
