ADM beats NHS freshman girls

ADEL — Newton High’s freshman girls played on the road and took a 44-34 loss to host Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Friday night.

The Cardinals led 18-7 after one quarter and held onto a 23-22 halftime lead. They got outscored 22-11 in the second half by ADM.

Abbie Barr led the way for Newton with 14 points. Rachel Rhoads had eight points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Maddi Thayer added six points.

Petyon Maher scored five points, made five steals and dished out five assists. Emily Valtman had five steals and one point.

Newton shot 23 percent, 13-of-56, from the field. The Cardinals had 34 rebounds, 18 steals and 27 turnovers in the contest.

The NHS freshman girls play at 5 p.m. Monday at home against Carlisle — a game Newton picked up after Oskaloosa cancelled its Feb. 4 game and the rest of its freshman girls’ schedule.
