Tigerhawks, Hawks, Cardinals see competition at Colfax Classic duals

COLFAX — Mat time is what wrestlers are looking for as high school sectional and district wrestling tournaments loom close in a couple of weeks. Three area high school teams got mat time Saturday competing in the Colfax-Mingo Colfax Classic, a duals tournament.

Ten teams including varsities from Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully and Newton High’s junior varsity were on the Tigerhawk mats Saturday in Colfax. Newton and a couple other larger schools had teams mixed with junior varsity and varsity wrestlers.

Newton’s junior varsity went 4-1, Lynnville-Sully was 3-2 and Colfax-Mingo was 1-4 in the duals. Newton beat Colfax-Mingo 42-36, defeated HLV 47-19, beat Ankeny Centennial JV 54-21 and downed Des Moines North-Hoover 45-24.

Lynnville-Sully is 2-1 against Colfax-Mingo this season after a 43-24 win Saturday. The Hawks beat North Mahaska 34-27 and Twin Cedars 63-6. Colfax-Mingo’s Tigerhawks got past HLV 36-27.

Newton’s Blake Cockerton (106) and Aren Sorensen (113) went 5-0 on the day while Ross Hull (120), Jon Lawton (138) and Brady Smith (4-1) were 4-1.

Damir Gumera (152), Jaise Gulling (182/195) and Landon Hansen (220) were each 3-2.

Coltin Whitten at 145 and Alex Miller at 285 were 2-3 for Newton. Reece Caves was 2-2 a 132 and Spencer Patterson was 0-1 at that weight. Blayden Rhone went 1-4 at 182/195.

Newton’s junior varsity wrestlers go to Nodaway Monday.

Colfax-Mingo had Ty Carlson (120), Adam Teed (132) and Colton Lourens (182) each put up a 4-1 marks. Going 3-2 for the Tigerhawks were Joseph Carolus (126) and Garrett Chapman (285).

Jordan Lescaleet (138) and Will Dunsbergen (145) were each 2-3. Nick Barnes (195) was 1-3 and Sykler Aikin (160) went 1-4.

Lynnville-Sully’s Sage Zylstra (138) had a 5-0 mark on the day. Caden Dunsbergen (152/145) was 3-0 and Caleb Barnett (195) was 2-0. Going 4-1 were Carson Dunsbergen (132), Cayden Johnson (145/152), Kyle Kramer (160), Jack Hardin (182/195) and Aaron Von Der Krol (220).

Ty Breeden was 3-2 at 126 for the Hawks. Colten Arment (170) and Cooper Scandridge (285) were 2-3.

Lynnville-Sully goes to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Thursday, while the Tigerhawks go to PCM.

Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully compete in the South Iowa Cedar League Conference meet in Sigourney Saturday.
