Newton swimmers win, tie opponents

GRINNELL — Newton Cardinal swimmers did something Thursday their coach hadn’t seen before — tie a team in dual action.

“We tied with Grinnell, 52-52. I’ve never seen that happen before,” Newton head coach Dave Hook said. “Overall, our guys did surprisingly well for their third meet in a week. We had some significant time drops on a night the guys were tired.”

Newton captured an 86-17 win over Williamsburg in the double dual at Grinnell. Grinnell beat Williamsburg, 89-14.

Aaron King, a senior, claimed two individual event wins for Newton. King won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.19 seconds and the 100-yard butterfly in a personal-best time of 56.87 seconds.

King combined with sophomore Jacob Knoll, junior Paul Maharry and freshman Adam Hunter to win the 200 medley relay to start the meet. The foursome’s winning time was 1 minute, 54.95 seconds.

Newton had the third-place time in the medley relay also. Seniors Zach Theis and Chet Adams combined with freshmen Deklan Lewis and Mason Lee for a 2:08.89.

Knoll won the 100 backstroke in 1:06.43 and Lewis was fourth in 1:13.08. Maharry touched first in the breaststroke in 1:13.32 with Theis in third place at 1:18.52.

Senior Isaak Webb tore through the water for a commanding win in the 200 individual medley race, winning 1:58.44 seconds. Grinnell’s Steven Sharpe was second in 2:24.84.

Theis gave Newton a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:30.15.

Webb and Hunter competed in the 500 freestyle race for the first time this season. Webb won in 5:37.10, which was 30 seconds faster than second place. Hunter was third in 6:19.10.

In the 50 freestyle, junior Zach Bayne was sixth in 31.33 seconds. Knoll placed third in the 200 freestyle race in 2:13.56 and Lewis was fourth in 2:24.9.

Lee took fourth in the 100 butterfly in 1:13.83. Maharry finished third in the 100 freestyle in 57.61 seconds and Adams was fifth in 1:07.96.

Newton’s team of Webb, Hunter, Lee and Knoll claimed second in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.72. Adams, Bayne and sophomore Grant Hamand was fifth in 2:07.62.

The foursome of Webb, This, Maharry and King placed second in the 400 freestyle relay race in 3:47.72. Lewis, Lee, Adams and Hunter combined for fourth in 4:15.92.

Bayne won the junior varsity 100 freestyle race in 1:10.43. Hamand took second in the 200 freestyle in 2:46.02 and was third in the junior varsity 100 breaststroke in 1:35.18.

Newton returns to Grinnell Jan. 30 for the conference swim meet.
