The Jasper County Republican Central Committee held its monthly meeting on Jan. 18 at the American Legion in Newton.
The following elected officials were present: Denny Carpenter, Jasper County Supervisor, who gave an update on the Jasper County budget and discussed other key issues, Sen. Brad Zaun, updated those in attendance on the Iowa Senate’s agenda, and Rep. Greg Heartsill, updated those in attendance as to what bills were currently in the Iowa House. They also thanked everyone who has supported them and continues to do so.
With the meeting being the last before the Iowa Caucus on Feb. 1 a presidential straw poll was held among the Jasper County Republican Committee and other Jasper County Republicans in attendance.
The results were: Cruz — 19 votes, Trump — 7 votes, Huckabee — 4 votes, Rubio — 4 votes, Bush — 4 votes, Paul — 3 votes, Carson — 3 votes, Christie — 1 vote and Kasich — 1 vote.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at the American Legion in Newton.
