Ruth Jones

Ruth “Mickey” Jones, 90, of Newton, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016, at Nelson Manor Nursing Home in Newton. A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to St. Jude Children’s Hospital may be left at the funeral home.

Ruth, the daughter of Edward and Eva (Anderson) Murphy, was born Feb. 13, 1925, in Sioux Rapids. She grew up in the Emmetsburg area and graduated from Emmetsburg Catholic High School. Ruth was a homemaker and lived in Chariton for many years before moving to Newton, two years ago. She enjoyed reading and playing scrabble. Ruth was also an active supporter of St. Jude Children’s Hospital and made hats, pajamas and tote bags for the children there.

Ruth is survived by her children, Claire Detray of Mt. Vernon, Wash., Douglas (Annie) Jones of Newton, Jeff Jones of Des Moines, and Roberta Jones of Chariton; grandchildren, Vanessa Jones, Steven Jones, Tony Atkins, Rava McLaine, Mellow Detray and Michelle Ryder; great-grandchildren, Ian, Riley, Loki, Odin, Phoenix, Stone and Richard; and her sister, Marge Murphy of Topeka, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Carl Farlow and Steven Jones; and a granddaughter, Megan Selby.
