NHS freshman girls win big

BONDURANT — Newton High’s freshman girls ran away from Bondurant-Farrar’s Jayettes Saturday. The Cardinals notched a 50-7 win.

Newton was up 20-4 by the end of the first quarter and 31-6 at halftime.

Peyton Maher fired 15 points, controlled eight rebounds, dished out three assists and had three steals to lead the Cardinals. Rachel Rhoads scored 10 points, made four steals and had three assists.

Abbie Barr tossed in eight points and was credited with eight steals. Maddi Thayer had seven points. Anna Coyle made five steals and Brittney McConnell had three steals.

Lakin Jenkins and Emily Valtman each had four points, and Teddie Brunsmann had two points. Valtman had three steals.

The Cardinal girls host their own tournament Monday.

The tournament games start at 5 p.m. with Newton playing Roland-Story in the NHS upper gym and Knoxville taking on North Polk in the lower gym.

Newton plays North Polk at 6:30 p.m. in the upper gym and Knoxville faces Roland-Story in the lower gym.
