PCM tops CMB in HOIC wrestling double dual

DES MOINES — Prairie City-Monroe wrestling coach Cory Waddell left Saydel High School wanting more Thursday night.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter coach Mike Leslie had a similar thought after the Heart of Iowa Conference double dual.

Both the Mustangs and Raiders had their ups and downs. PCM started the night with a narrow 33-32 loss to Saydel but bounced back to beat CMB 48-32.

“We are not a team that can go without anyone,” said Waddell, whose Mustangs were missing Lucas Roland and Nathan Trausch due to minor injuries. “We are not deep enough of a team to be without our big hammers.”

The Raiders’ final match of the night was a 57-18 defeat at the hands of the host Eagles. Afterwards, Leslie talked about how his squad is still not doing the little things that make a wrestling team successful.

“It’s the simple mistakes that we are still making that is frustrating,” Leslie said. “They either have to fix the simple mistakes or they’ll see the same results. Sooner or later the light bulb has got to turn on.”

There were seven forfeits combined in the CMB-PCM dual. The Mustangs collected the win in large part due to four pins from Chance Palm (120), Brycen Rogers (126), Xavier Miller (145) and Wes Cummings (152).

PCM (6-14 overall, 4-4 in HOIC) was 4-3 in contested matches against CMB. The Raiders (3-13, 3-5) got wins on the mat from Lincoln Brown (138), Evan Bianchi (160) and Logan Mitchell (182).

The Mustangs jumped out to a 30-0 lead and led 42-4 with four matches to go. Mitchell’s pin against Dalton Schlangen started a stretch of four straight wins for CMB. Charles Robertson (195), Dylan Williams (220) and Archer McFadden (285) all won by forfeit.

Robertson and Williams were the only Raider wrestlers to go 2-0 on the night. Both were given two forfeits. Robertson is now 21-1, Bianchi sits at 15-6 and McFadden is 17-6.

PCM began its night with a loss to Saydel. The difference in the match came at 170 pounds where Mustang freshman Jarron Trausch (24-4) was upset by Trevor Sprague, a wrestler Trausch pinned in the PCM Invitational this past weekend.

“He tried a move and got caught,” Waddell said of Trausch. “He’s a high flyer. He goes after the big move and got caught. He’ll learn from it. He’ll be all right.”

Cummings and Schlangen both won their matches by fall. Cummings pinned Devon Van Houten by fall a few days after defeating him 5-2 in the championship match of the PCM tourney.

“That was a good statement match. He was better on his feet,” Waddell said. “He has one really good move, and that’s what he was using. Tonight, he used more moves and good things happened.”

The absence of Roland (24-2) and Nathan Trausch played a factor in the dual. Roland pinned Oscar Ruiz in their first meeting of the year, but Ruiz got his team six points Thursday after his pin of Cody Wallace.

There was a double forfeit at 195, but Nathan Trausch could have weighed in and took a forfeit if he wasn’t injured.

Either of those wins would have given the Mustangs another dual win.

Cummings, who is ranked No. 8 at 152, got two wins by fall to improve his record to 20-1. Miller won twice to move to 26-4 on the season.

Rogers, Chace Palm (15-8) and Jakeb Fenton (20-11) were 2-0, too. Fenton and Palm each took two forfeits at 106 and 113, respectively.

Saydel (7-13, 5-3) completed its Senior Night with an easy win over CMB. The Raiders won just one contested match and that came from Caleb Fullerton, who rallied from an early deficit to pin Bryce Camp at 126.

The Eagles had six pins in the dual and were handed three forfeits.

We have to work harder, and if we don’t, those are the results we are going to get every time,” Leslie said. “There were plenty of matches that could have went the other way if we wrestled a little smarter. We got sloppy. We were in control of some of them but got caught. If we weren’t wrestling sloppy, that wouldn’t happen.”

PCM wrestles in the ADM Invitational on Saturday. CMB heads to Iowa Falls on Tuesday for a double dual against Iowa Falls-Alden and Roland-Story.
