Another new ‘local’ book at our library

John McNeer

Newton

Recently, Rod Slings presented a fascinating program to our local Rotary Club membership, following a similar presentation to the Newton Kiwanians. Rod, along with contributing authors Mike Van Durme, and Keith Byers have published a new book titled “Blood on the Leaves,” related to real hunting accident investigations and lessons in hunter safety.

These thee gentlemen have over 75 years of law enforcement experience, and more than 60 years of investigating hunting accidents. They are leaders in training wild life offices around the world in these unique skills. This 310 page book provides some great reading for individuals from most any walk of life.

Having finished reading this book I can now agree ... and have delivered a complimentary autographed copy by Rod Slings to our local library the true to life stories relate how minor departures from safety codes have unleashed devastating consequences on both the victim and shooter.

Currently, only one copy is available at the Newton library, so you may find yourself on the waiting list but, anyone interested in unique stories of this nature may find the book a “good read.”

I finish this note with a sincere “plug” for our local library, which is one of the finest in the Midwest. Having had the privilege of serving on our library board of directors for 16 years, my admiration for a great library staff, and equally great contents and services continues.
