Newton 8th-grade boys open season

Newton’s eighth-grade boys opened their basketball season Thursday at home against Woodward-Granger with a split decision, losing the A-team game and winning a B-team contest.

On Monday, the Cardinals pulled out a 48-47 victory over host Grinnell after trailing by five points at halftime. Taylor Danley and Kyle Long poured in 13 points each for Newton. William Cheng scored 12 points and Quintrail Coley added eight points.

Grinnell got past Newton’s B-team, 14-10. Clay Meyer and Antonio Usry had four points apiece for the Cardinals. Constance Grigsby had two points.

Newton won a C-team game, 32-25, over Grinnell. Eli Ingle tossed in 14 points for Newton. Nate Keith and Caleb Pline had six points apiece.

Against Woodward-Granger, the Cardinals dropped a 46-23 decision in the A-team game.

Jake Herbold and Cody Satterfield each tossed in six points for Newton. Kaleb Dydell added five points. Danley and Dalton Altemeier scored two points apiece.

Newton B-team notched a 36-16 win against Woodward-Granger. Firing in 12 points apiece for the Cardinals were Grigsby and Meyer. Ingle scored six points. Scoring two points each were Keith, Gatlin Chamber and Usry.

The eighth-grade teams are coached by Andrew Kuker and Tyler Stewart.
