Lynnville-Sully girls claim SICL victory in opener

VICTOR — Lynnville-Sully’s girls controlled their season-opening basketball game Monday with their defense. The Hawks powered past HLV’s Warriors, 58-19, in South Iowa Cedar League play.

“Our defense was the difference tonight as we never let HLV get any open shots, and it led to some easy baskets,” Hawk head coach Jerry Hulsing said. “I thought our offense was good at times. ”

The Hawks began with a 12-5 first-quarter advantage. By halftime, Lynnville-Sully had a commanding 39-13 lead over HLV. The Hawks increased the margin to 56-19 by the end of three quarters.

Lynnville-Sully limited the Warriors’ offense. The Warriors shot 20 percent, 8-of-39, from the field and hit 3-of-10 free throw attempts. The Hawks held a 44-23 rebounding edge.

The Hawks nailed 5-of-15 3-point field goals and were 21-of-48 from the field overall for 43 percent. They cashed in 11-of 23 free throw attempts.

Brenna Lanser scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Marissa Vos added 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Haley James scored seven points while Mariah Vos, Makenzy Rozendaal and Camyryn Russed each had five points. Kasiah Ehresman and Hailey Scandridge scored three points each.

Marissa Vos and Russell each had three assists. Lynnville-Sully made 14 steals led by Marissa Vos, James and Russell with three apiece.

Brooke Kuesel was HLV’s leading scorer with nine points.

Lynnville-Sully (1-0) is at BGM Monday.
