Man gets suspended sentence in sex abuse case

CHARLES CITY — A Charles City man has received a suspended two-year prison sentence for assault with intent to commit sexual abuse. Barry J. Holden Jr., 31, was also ordered Wednesday to register as a sex offender and was put on probation for two years. Holden was to be tried this week on charges of first-degree burglary, third-degree sexual abuse and assault with intent to commit sexual abuse resulting in bodily injury. Authorities say the crimes occurred in July 2013.

The third-degree sexual abuse charge was dismissed in exchange for Holden pleading guilty to assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor, rather than assault with intent to commit sexual abuse resulting in bodily injury.

The burglary charge was dismissed by the state due to lack to sufficient evidence.
