Man attacks woman with hammer, faces attempted murder charge

A Newton man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly assaulting a female victim with a hammer.

Jasper County Sheriff's deputies were called to a residence in the 2800 block of West Highway F48 at 10:30 p.m. Monday night regarding a domestic disturbance. There, they determined Abraham Stone, 33, of Newton, had struck a female victim with a hammer and choked her. The victim suffered only minor injuries.

Stone was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail, where he is being held on a $50,000 bond.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, which is a Class B felony, Stone was also charged with going armed with intent, which is a Class D felony, and domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injury, which is an aggravated misdemeanor.

The sheriff's office did not release any other information.
