David Lyle Vorhies

David Lyle Vorhies, 83, of Newton, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015, at home with his family. David’s body has been donated to Des Moines University for research and no services are scheduled at this time.

David, the son of James and Mary (Brady) Vorhies, was born Feb. 18, 1932, at the Rex-5 mining community by Lovilla. He grew up in Bussey, and attended one year at Drake University before serving his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War for two years. In 1954, David was united in marriage with Mikelle Ann Stewart in Unionville, Mo. They made their home in Newton, where David worked for the Maytag Company as the warehouse manager for 37 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Izaak Walton League. David was a sportsman, enjoying both hunting and fishing and going to his cabin in Crane Lake, Minn. He also liked to read and go to the casino. David was a devoted family man and especially enjoyed watching his great-grandchildren grow.

Those left to honor David’s memory are his son, Steven Vorhies of Newton; two daughters, Nancy (Don) Ross of Newton and Susie (Ronnie) Jones of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Jon Kauzlarich, Katie (Ben) Kaiser, Jessie (Lucas) Mihalovich, Jamie Jones and Laurie (Derek) Beckman; eight great-grandchildren, Tyler, Ayden, Lily, Mya, Joseph, Jack, Sophie and Hunter; and his siblings, Jim (Susan) Vorhies of Cumming, Karen (Don) Udelhoven of Boone, Karla Sears of West Des Moines, and Kathy (Donnie) Slycord of Urbandale. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mikelle Vorhies; and son-in-law, Brian Kauzlarich.
