Veterans need support at the statehouse

Those who know me best understand my passion for veterans and issues that affect veterans. Nov. 11, Veterans Day, is one of the highlights of my year. It is a day that veterans can place politics aside and rest in the fact that they get their own day to be recognized. That is why I had to take a second look when I saw the letter to the editor from Rep. Dan Kelley.

His letter asked us to honor our veterans and their continued service and sacrifice. Not only on Veterans Day, but every day. I couldn’t agree more. Unfortunately, my mind went back to last year’s Veterans Trust Fund bill and Rep. Kelley’s no vote on the bill. The bill provided funding for the least fortunate veterans among us. I did not, and still do not, agree with Rep. Kelley’s vote against the vets. But, the past is the past, and I have moved on. Everybody deserves a second chance.

Since Wes Breckenridge announced he will be seeking the Iowa House seat held by Dan, I have noticed a newfound interest and participation in veterans events by Mr. Kelley. That is good. He attended a veteran’s medal ceremony for the first time and has now written the letter to the editor. That’s a good start. Where we really need him to support us is in the statehouse.

Generations of veterans have listened to politicians state, “we support you” only to have them vote against the same veterans when given the chance. It is time for that to stop. Iowa veterans need advocates on the hill. When the vote was taken on the Veterans Trust Fund bill, the final tally was 144-5. Dan Kelley was one of the five that voted no. I believe his vote should have been yes. Writing a letter of support on Veterans Day is easy. We need someone to carry the heavy load for vets at the Capitol. We need tireless advocates. Most importantly, we need representatives who will vote yes for the neediest among us when given the opportunity. Veterans are tired of the same old lip service stating “I support you.” Will Dan Kelley now be that representative? I hope so. Only time will tell.
