Mental health stigma plagues recovery

Having known the stigma of having a mental illness in the past, it will continue for probably several more years yet. People who have never had a mental illness many times believe the person who does is causing the problem themselves.

People with mental problems are commonly told to stop complaining. But a mental illness, as they stated in the article, happens because the brain chemistry is either altered by a very disturbing event, a change in body chemistry such as hormones or some type of injury. And these eventually happen to everyone at some point in their life.

But when this happens to a person who has never had mental illness before, many times they won’t seek help because of the stigma. They don’t want anyone to see them going into the psychiatrist’s office because of what the other person might think or say to others. So they wait and things just get worse. These are things that people should think about and realize before making a judgment about someone else.
