Area players earn SICL volleyball honors

The two area volleyball players were awarded for their work for their respective teams, earning 2015 All-South Iowa Cedar League first-team honors. The SICL coaches selected the all-conference first and second teams and honorable mentions recently.

Receiving honorable mention honors from the SICL coaches were Lynnville-Sully seniors Shelby Foster and Kristen Van Der Wilt and Colfax-Mingo junior Dakota Hostetter and sophomore Megan Earles. Neither area team had players named to the second team.

Joining Lanser and Wilson on the conference’s first team were Iowa Valley’s senior Marissa Ward, who was the lone unanimous selection, Montezuma freshman Riley Gatton, North Mahaska junior Olivia Boender, HLV junior Brooke Kuesel, BGM senior Jolissa Kriegel and Sigourney senior Sierra Davis.

Also on the first team as conference setters were Iowa Valley sophomore Cherisse Ward and North Mahaska junior Katie Koehler. The all-conference libero was BGM junior Hope Beck. Iowa Valley’s Greg Jergens was coach of the year, guiding the Tigers to an undefeated, 11-0, SICL mark.

Montezuma and North Mahaska each went 9-2 in conference play. Lynnville-Sully (10-9) finished at 7-4. In its first season in the SICL, Colfax-Mingo (9-18) went 4-7.

Lanser finished with 314 digs, which is 4.76 digs per set, and 209 kills (3.17 per set) to lead the Hawks. She was an 88-percent server, 200-of-227, and she led the team with 54 ace serves. The junior had three assisted blocks and two solo blocks.

As Lynnville-Sully’s senior libero, Van Der Wilt had 177 digs, which was second on the team. She was second in ace serves with 43 as a 96-percent server, 214-of-223. Van Der Wilt had five kills.

Foster was third on the Hawk team in digs with 165. She put up 53 set assists and served at a 93-percent clip, 141-of-152, with 15 aces. At the net, the senior delivered 34 kills and two block assists.

Ries was in the SICL conference top five in both kills, 316, and digs, 270, as she led the Tigerhawks. Wilson had 25 blocks at the net. The sophomore hitter also was one of the top servers for Colfax-Mingo with 46 ace serves.

Earles was the Tigerhawks’ setter, leading them with 419 assists, which pushed her toward the top of the assist list in the conference. Earles finished with 166 digs. Hostetter, a hitter for the Tigerhawks, produced 96 kills and was credited with 216 digs.

On the second team were Sigourney sophomore Leah Carter as setter, Iowa Valley junior Isabel Patterson as libero, Iowa Valley sophomore Caleigh Smith, Montezuma senior Katie Maschmann and sophomore Hanna Jones, North Mahaska junior Jensen Keiderman, Belle Plaine freshman Kenzie Mantz, HLV junior Kelsea Shaull and Sigourney junior Anna Ohland.

Each conference team had two players receive honorable mention honors.
