Tigerhawks shut down GMG, gain momentum heading into playoffs

GARWIN — Colfax-Mingo’s dominant first quarter allowed the starters to exit the game early and get rested up for the postseason.

The Tigerhawks host their first playoff game since 2003 on Wednesday, and they’ll take momentum from a 65-0 triumph over Green Mountain-Garwin with them. Colfax-Mingo led 37-0 after one quarter and cruised to the easy Class A District 7 win on the road Friday.

Colfax-Mingo locked up the No. 2 seed out of the district before the game. The Tigerhawks open the postseason against Earlham (6-3) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at home.

Jared Myers left the game after just one pass in the second quarter. He finished 8-of-12 for 151 yards and five scores in the game. His one pass in the second quarter was a 40-yard touchdown strike to Jacob Lietz.

Lietz caught three touchdown passes from Myers on the night and also returned a kickoff 80 yards for a score in the third quarter.

Jacob Buehrer got the Tigerhawks on the board with a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He concluded the quarter with a 9-yard touchdown catch from Myers and scored a third time on a 1-yard touchdown run in the second period.

Lietz made it 14-0 in the first following his 6-yard touchdown catch, and then the lead grew to 21-0 after his 21-yard touchdown catch. Jarod Nichols had the other first-quarter touchdown as he hauled in a 1-yard pass from Myers.

The final points of the game came when sophomore Reegan Van Dyke threw a screen pass to freshman Zarek Hill. Hill took the pass and went 65 yards for the score.

Van Dyke, who also converted a pair of two-point conversion runs, finished 5-of-9 for 151 yards. Lietz had four catches for 92 yards and three scores, Hill had 87 yards on two catches and Blake Summy hauled in three catches for 59 yards.

Lietz now has 52 catches on the season. That ties Joe Borts’ single-season school record that was set back in 2010.

Summy ran in a two-point conversion and had two fumble recoveries on defense.

Alan Wheeler led the defense with seven tackles, and Lane Dunblazer and Jimmy Camp each had five tackles.

Colin Lourens had four tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery. Lourens now has six sacks on the season and is just 1/2 sack away from tying the school’s single-season record.
