• Jasper County Democratic Central Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Garden Room at Park Centre in Newton. Workshops, fundraising, caucus plans and candidate events are on the agenda. All Democrats are welcome.

• Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley will host a roundtable discussion with Iowa workers at 3 p.m. Friday at UAW Local 997, 1813 First St. N. in Newton. O’Malley will talk about trade policies and how to build a strong American economy for the middle class

• Book Sale will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 210 N. Second Ave. E. in Newton. All books are reasonably priced with the proceeds going to fund “Change a Child’s Story,” a literacy program to serve local children and sponsored by the Iowa United Methodist Conference. The Free Treasures Giveaway will be going on at the same time in the church fellowship hall. All are welcome.

• Pottery Class will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Centre for Arts and Artists in Newton. Class limit is seven.

• Grinnell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at Hawkeye Stages, 300 E. 17th St. S. in Newton. Coffee will be served first will the meeting beginning at 9:30 a.m. Hostess will be Susan Wendel and Jane Cruchelow. Program by John Billingsley, “George Washington-The Asgill Affair.”

• Willowbrook 5K Run will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Willowbrook, 501 E. Second St. N. in Newton. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
