Popular flea market, art show back at McCann

With roots back to 1989, the McCann Flea Market and Art Show has been a popular event for both the community and the church.

Even as the trends have changed, vendors and consumers keep coming back to see what new items are for sale and to enjoy fellowship with friends at the annual event.

This year’s event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 24 at Sacred Heart Church in the McCann Center, 1115 S. Eighth Ave. E. Admission is free and everyone is welcome with organizers expecting close to 30 tables full of a variety of items.

“We have been hosting the show since 1989. I have been in charge of reservations since that time, pushing my kids around on the table trucks when they were little,” event organizer JoAnne Price said. “We always have a great crowd, particularly in the morning. Folks are anxious to see familiar vendors and also what new items might be available. It is a great opportunity to start Christmas shopping.”

This year, those visiting the show will be in for a treat. Vendors will be selling handmade items including handmade leather goods, little girl’s tutus and hair accessories, purses, jewelry from repurposed items, crocheted and quilted items, solar lights, soaps and lotions.

For those with a sweet tooth pies and jellies will be for sale. Consultants from Mary Kay, Tupperware, Tastefully Simple and Mary & Martha will also be on hand to present and sell their products.

Breakfast and lunch will be available throughout the event provided by women of the church.

“Church ladies will be selling delicious, fresh baked cinnamon rolls and coffee in the morning.  Beef burgers, soup and pie are available for lunch,” Price said.

Along with the vendors, a large rummage room will be full of treasures and bargains.

“Come early for the best selection and then come back later after lunch when you can get a bag full for a dollar,” Price said.

Funds raised from the even are used for the annual Sacred Heart scholarship awards that are given to high school graduates every year.
