HUXLEY — Newton High’s junior varsity football team dropped an 18-14 decision to host Ballard Monday.
The Cardinals scored twice in the first half to lead 14-12 at halftime. Ballard scored the go-ahead touchdown with less than five minutes left in the game.
Zach Combs put the Cardinals on the scoreboard when he returned a Bomber fumble 33 yards for a touchdown. Combs kicked the extra point to give Newton a 7-6 lead.
Newton trailed 12-7 when Austin Reynolds hauled in a pass from Reagan Maple. The scoring play covered 78 yards, and with Combs’ kick, the Cardinals were up 14-12.
The Cardinals had a potential scoring drive end with a fumble inside the Ballard 10-yard line in the third quarter.
Jaron Roush led the Cardinals in rushing with 31 yards on seven carries. Maple went 4-of-11 passing for 95 yards.
Defensive standouts for Newton in game were Joe Bush and Lucas Montgomery.
Newton (2-3) hosts Pella Monday at H.A. Lynn Stadium.
