George M. Frisbie

George M. Frisbie, 68, of Newton, died Monday, Sept. 28, 2015, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory followed by a military burial at Newton Union Cemetery Veteran’s Section. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1 at the funeral home. Memorials to the Blank Children’s Pediatric Cancer Unit may be left at the funeral home.

George, the son of Roy and Emily (Sam) Frisbie, was born Nov. 15, 1946, in Bakersfield, Calif. Shortly after George was born, the family returned to their home in El Paso, Texas where George was raised, so although he was born in California he would always tell you that he was a Texan through and through. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in El Paso and then served his country for eight years in the United States Air Force during the Big War of Vietnam. After the service, he returned to Texas and received his B.A. at UTEP and later his M.B.A. at the University of Phoenix. George accepted a job with the Maytag Company where he would work for 27 years in marketing and sales as the appliance parts coordinator.

On Oct. 10, 1982, George was united in marriage with Becky Pollock in Charleston, Mo. With Maytag they lived in both St. Louis and Newton. In 2004, George took early retirement with Maytag and then began working at 1st Source in Houston, Texas as the vice president of marketing, retiring in December of 2013. Much to Becky and their daughter Emily’s delight, they moved back to Newton.

Through the years, George had coached both football and softball for his children’s teams. He also enjoyed playing golf and napping in his chair while golf was on television. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys and St. Louis Cardinals fan. George was known as a grillmaster and liked to BBQ. His two most favorite hobbies though were spoiling his grandchildren rotten and sitting out under his tree.

Those left to celebrate George’s life, by quoting old John Wayne movies, telling stories about being from “Straight out of Newton,” and loving ‘Merica are his wife, Becky Frisbie of Newton; children, Michelle Peterson of Austin, Texas, Heath (Andrea) Frisbie of Austin, Scott (Kimberly) Frisbie of Dallas, Texas and Emily (Aaron) Hornbuckle of Newton; seven grandchildren, Chelsey Peterson, Heath Frisbie II, Haydan Frisbie, Scott Frisbie II, Katelyn Frisbie, Michael Frisbie and Amelia Hornbuckle; his sister, Elizabeth Turner (Shane Harwell) of Dallas; brother, Mark (Vickie) Frisbie of Dallas; brother-in-law, Walter (Debbie) Pollock of Sikeston, Mo.; and his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including his buddy, Joe (Linda) Coen of Newton.
