Gilbert defeats Newton freshmen

Newton High’s freshman came up short at home Friday night. After a 6-0 lead, the Cardinals fell behind and couldn’t catch up to Gilbert, losing 27-14.

Thomas Cox scored the first touchdown of the game for Newton. Gilbert went up 7-6 in the second quarter, and used an interception to score again before halftime.

The Tigers built on their 13-6 halftime lead when they recovered a fumbled snap by the Cardinals. Gilbert converted the turnover into a third-quarter touchdown.

Gilbert had a high snap on a punt attempt in the fourth quarter. Newton recovered the football, which led to a 5-yard touchdown run by Coltin Whitten. Whitten tacked on the two-point conversion to make it 20-14.

The Cardinals weren’t able to make a stop on defense. Gilbert scored with a minute left in the game for the final margin.

No individual statistics for the Newton freshmen were available at press time.

The freshmen play at home Friday against Ballard.
