Jack R. Smith, the son of Arthur R. and Inez (Hill) Smith, was born July 12, 1928, in Des Moines.

Jack was a proud veteran of the Korean War. He made Newton his home for the past 20 years.

Jack worked as a welder for the Miracle Recreational Equipment Company of Grinnell, before being hired by the Maytag Company. He worked in the Maytag factory for the next 25 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of UAW Local 997 On Feb. 4, 1993, Jack was united in marriage to his wife of 22 years, Iris M. Salasberry (Seals).

Jack enjoyed boating, fishing, cruising on his scooter, playing cards, his many tools, woodworking and always modifying plans to build his next saw. He attended the Metz Community Church as well as Bar None Cowboy Church.

Jack passed away Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015, at the age of 87 He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur; mother, Inez; his first wife, Alene; as well as good friend and cousin, Terry Madison.

Those left to honor Jack’s memory are his wife, Iris of Newton; five stepchildren, Joyce Breckenridge (Tom McGinnis) of Fairfax, Joleen Crawford (John) of Clifton Hill, Mo., David Salasberry of Des Moines, Brenda Van Hoose (Dale) of Spring, Texas, and Randy Salasberry (Shelly) of Newton; along with 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandbaby; brother-in-law and friend Ora (Louise) Seals; sister-in-law Faith Engle; as well as dear friends, Larry and Judy Bonnell.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28 at Bar None Cowboy Church. Family will be present one hour prior to service. Memorials may be left in Jack’s name.
