GRIMES — Newton High’s Cardinals were no match for their hosts Tuesday. Dallas Center-Grimes’ Fillies rolled to a 25-10, 25-14, 25-15 win over the Cardinals in Little Hawkeye Conference play.

“DCG brought their A game,” Newton assistant coach Taylor Peska said. “We know what we need to work on to make improvements.”

From the service line, Pressgrove had two ace serves. Ahn and Audrey Lucas each had one ace serve.

The Cardinals fell to 0-3 in LHC action and 8-11 overall. Newton plays in the Nevada tournament Saturday.

Newton’s junior varsity beat Dallas Center-Grimes, 25-21, 25-7. The junior varsity plays in a tournament Saturday at Indianola.

The NHS freshman A-team lost 25-21, 25-6 to DCG. Tegan Simmons had two kills and one solo block. Brittney McConnell downed a kill and Mariah Wickliffe had a dig.

Newton’s freshman B-team split with DCG, losing the first set, 25-7, and winning the second set, 25-22. Kyleigh Stevenson had three service aces and three kills while Carolyn Kimmel had three ace serves and one kill. Desirae Shelton served two aces and downed three kills. Anna VanDam had one ace serve.

“We came out strong right away with DCG, good serves and attacks at the net. We stopped passing consistently and communicating and that is what triggered us to fall apart,” Newton freshman head coach Michaela Wood said.

“In the B game, the girls had good serves and attacks, and after a couple points, we were playing really tough and aggressive. We’ve got some days of rest and practice before playing next week at home. With it being homecoming, I hope the girls will be able to enjoy the activities associated with it.”

Newton hosts Grinnell in LHC play Tuesday with freshman, junior varsity and varsity matches at NHS.
