Tigerhawks continue to roll, rally past Belle Plaine

BELLE PLAINE — The Colfax-Mingo football team rallied from a 16-14 halftime deficit and picked up a big Class A District 7 win on the road Friday.

Jared Myers passed for 160 yards, ran for 110 more and scored five total touchdowns in Colfax-Mingo’s 38-28 triumph over Belle Plaine.

A Jared Myers 4-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion pass from Myers to Jacob Lietz gave the Tigerhawks their first lead in the third quarter, and the Tigerhawks took the lead for good when Myers rumbled nine yards for the score.

Colfax-Mingo’s lone touchdown in the fourth was a 15-yard pass from Myers to Blake Summy.

Myers scored the Tigerhawks’ two first-half touchdowns, too.

He answered Belle Plaine’s first score with a 38-yard fumble return touchdown and then countered another Belle Plaine touchdown with a 10-yard touchdown run. That made it 16-14 at halftime.

It was the tale of two halves for the Tigerhawks. Colfax-Mingo was 5-of-14 through the air in the first two quarters but Myers completed 7-of-10 in the final two periods.

The Tigerhawks also had a 6.6 yards per rush average in the second half after rushing for 2.5 yards per carry in the first half.

Colin Lourens led the Tigerhawk receivers with four catches for 79 yards, while Lietz hauled in four passes for 32 yards. Jake Buehrer also had 31 yards on two catches.

Lietz led the defense with 15 1/2 tackles, while Myers had 11 1/2 tackles, four tackles for loss and a touchdown off a fumble recovery.

Defensive end Alan Wheeler finished with 10 1/2 tackles, while nose tackle Jimmy Camp recovered two fumbles.

Colfax-Mingo and Class A No. 2 BGM are the only two remaining District 7 teams without a loss in district play. Class A No. 7 Montezuma lost for the first time when it was upset by Lynnville-Sully on Friday.

The Tigerhawks (3-1, 2-0) travel to North Mahaska this Friday.

North Mahaska (1-3) is 0-2 in district play and has been outscored 109-13 in losses to BGM and Belle Plaine.
