Cardinal freshmen notch win over Benton in the rain

VAN HORNE — Torrential rain did not deter Newton High’s freshmen Friday night. The Cardinals chalked up a 24-6 win over Benton’s Bobcats.

Newton was up 6-0 at halftime on a 63-yard touchdown run by Josh Miller. In the third quarter, Thomas Cox returned a Bobcat fumble 43 yards for a touchdown to put the Cardinals up 12-0.

In the fourth quarter, Miller got loose for a 28-yard touchdown run, following another Benton fumble. Coltin Whitten dashed 54 yards to the end zone.

Benton scored late in the game.

“The boys were hungry to finish a football game,” Newton freshman head coach Trent Powers said.

“We stayed mentally tough in extreme weather conditions. We battled, forced turnovers and rushed for over 300 yards. It was a great all around team victory.”

Cox finished with 90 yards on 13 carries for Newton while Miler had 92 yards on four carries.

Whitten rushed for 56 yards on four carries, and Norbert Riyazimana had 29 yards on two carries.

Luke Maharry rushed for 30 yards on one carry, and Mason Lee had 26 yards on four hauls.

Cox had four tackles and two fumble recoveries for the Cardinal defense. Jacob Murphy and Whitten each had four tackles and a fumble recovery. Miller racked up five tackles, and Austin Romberg had one tackle and a fumble recovery.

Newton (2-2) hosts Gilbert at 4:45 p.m. Friday at H.A. Lynn Stadium.
