Braves hand Hawks first SICL loss

SULLY — Montezuma’s Braves staged a three-set rally in the a best-of-five volleyball match Thursday handing Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks their first conference loss.

Lynnville-Sully appeared to be on its way to South Iowa Cedar League win at home by winning the first two sets. Montezuma turned the tide in the third set, winning the match 18-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15, 15-13.

“We came out strong the first two sets, but Montezuma was getting tougher. By the third set on, they started coming alive and by the fourth set they were on fire,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Heather James said. “There were long volleys where it could’ve gone either way, and it seems we lost those at the end.”

Brenna Lanser had another double-double on the volleyball court for the Hawks. She delivered 21 kills at the net and was credited with 33 digs defensively. She served up seven aces.

Skyler Young had a double-double with 13 set assists and 10 digs. Young had five ace serves. Kristen Van Der Wilt came up with 18 digs.

Makenzy Rozendaal went 15-of-15 at the service line. She had six kills and made 22 digs.

“It was tough to lose this one. But when we play well, and get beat by a better team that makes it easier to take,” James said.

Lynnville-Sully dropped to 3-1 in SICL action and 5-3 overall. The Hawks travel to New Sharon Saturday for the North Mahaska tournament. They return to New Sharon Monday to play North Mahaska in conference action.
