Phyllis Hopkins

Phyllis Marie (Herzog) Hopkins peacefully died early Monday morning Sept. 7, 2015, with her family at her side in Mesa, Ariz.

Phyllis was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. She was a member of Bethany Church in Baxter. She was born in Newton, April 6, 1928. She lived in and around Baxter from birth to her retirement move to Mesa, Ariz., in 2005. She worked at the State Savings Bank in Baxter and retired from the Baxter Community School after 26 years as a “lunch lady.”

In 1975, she became a grandmother for the first time and from that time on was affectionately known as “Granny” to all the kids that knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, TW Herzog and Dorothea Herzog; her brother Bud Herzog (Lavall); her son, Gary Lee Hopkins; and her husband of 62 years, Kenneth Carl Hopkins in 2010.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Susan (Hopkins) Perisho of Mesa, Ariz., her son Douglas Hopkins and Carla of Mesa, Ariz., and her son Jeffrey Hopkins and Diane of Des Moines; her sister, Linda (Herzog) and husband Randy Timm of Virginia; and daughter-in-law, Ginger LaKose of Des Moines.

She is also survived by and will be missed by grandchildren Matt Perisho of Chandler, Ariz., and his children Ashlee and Ryan, and Toni (Perisho) Follett of Mesa, Ariz., and her children Mason, Noelle and Presley, Jeramy Hopkins, Kyle Hopkins and Casey Hopkins of Hawaii, Joel Hopkins of Des Moines and Stacy (Hopkins) Simbro of Newton, Jestin Bills of Johnston, and Jesickah Bills of Altoona; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Phyllis is loved and remembered by many dear friends and family, nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Plans for a memorial service have not yet been made.
