CMB sweeps Madrid in volleyball

MADRID — Four players had at least four kills, Kathleen Baldwin finished with 21 assists and Toni Spencer collected 14 digs as the Collins-Maxwell/Baxter volleyball team swept Madrid on Monday night.

The Raiders got seven kills and seven digs from Bridget Hurley and it helped push the visitors to a 25-12, 25-19, 25-16 win over the Tigers.

“We played well and dominated pretty much the entire game,” CMB coach Scott Ranck said. “We are looking at each match as a stepping stone to the next, learning and working our way up to a new level of play.”

Payge Jurgens and Brianda Bane each had six kills and Bekah Pearson finished with four.

Pearson also had seven digs, while Baldwin had six digs and Bane recorded two blocks.

CMB served up nine aces, led by three each from Spencer and Jordynn Wesselink.

CMB started the opening set with a 7-0 lead and never looked back as Spencer served 13 of the team’s 25 points.

The second game was the most competitive and CMB didn’t pull away until Madrid closed the gap to 13-10.

The final frame was tied at 12-all, but a timeout by Ranck allowed the Raiders to regroup, and CMB closed the set on a 13-4 run.

The Raiders (6-2) travel to Class 3A No. 1 Nevada at 7 p.m. Thursday.
