Man to serve probation for Newton stabbing

A Des Moines man charged with the attempted murder of a Newton man will serve two years of probation after pleading guilty to a lesser charge on Monday.

Quentin A. Smith, 25, was charged in March after a Newton couple woke up to find their house guest, Smith, standing over them in the bedroom with a knife in his hand. A male victim fled the room and armed himself with a knife, but ultimately was stabbed by Smith in the arm and cut near his collarbone, according to a police report.

Smith admitted to stabbing the victim in the arm and believed he was stealing his medication, police said.

Smith pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor. He was ordered to serve two years of probation and pay restitution in an amount not yet known to the court, along with additional court costs.
